The Hobbit Production Video #5 - Logistics of Filming
Peter Jackson just released the latest video blog called Production Video #5: featuring the behind the scenes look at the epic logistics necessary to film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
After weeks of filming indoors, the Hobbit crew ventured out throughout New Zealand to capture, as Jackson put it, “the landscapes of Middle Earth.” With an army of 500 personel for the Main Unit and another 200 for the Second Unit, this vblog captures the tremendous logistics and planning necessary to make this movie work.
I think the best part of the video is when they explore Hobbiton and see Elijah Wood as Frodo again. It’s great to see the story on how they selected this location and how they were able to create Hobbiton using the existing landscape. For The Hobbit, Jackson and his crew created permanent Hobbit dwellings or “Hobbit Holes” instead of temporary set pieces. This makes sense in terms of tourism since New Zealand is virtually synonymous Middle Earth and the Lord of the Rings saga. Why not make a real Hobbiton where visitors can walk and explore this fantasy world. Now I really want to visit New Zealand!
Thanks to Peter Jackson for updating the fans on the progress of The Hobbit and providing us with a glimpse of what it takes to produce this epic film!
