With The Avengers, Joss Whedon Masters the Marvel Universe
With the Avengers opening in less than 3 days, I read a great article profiling Joss Whedon on Wired Magazine. It describes Whedon’s successful rise with cult fave Buffy the Vampire Slayer, his setbacks with Firefly and Dollhouse, to his eventual selection as director of the Avengers.
Marvel and Disney took a major gamble with Joss Whedon as director. After all, his only major film to date was Serenity - a sequel to Firefly. According to the article, Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, said, “We needed somebody who wasn’t going to reinvent the wheel, because the die was cast and the cast was cast,” “And yet we wanted somebody with a unique voice, because this had to feel like a part one, not Iron Man 3 or Thor 2.”
“The Avengers has so many characters, and the only reason for them to team up is some world-shattering threat, which equals spectacle,” Feige says. “How can we navigate all those characters and not have them get lost in the action?” In other words, whoever directed it would need to be able to handle the storytelling and characterization issues that came with an ensemble. And while it wasn’t a requirement, it’d be nice to have someone with geek cred—someone who knew their way around comic books.
Looks like they picked the right man for the job! The Avengers Assemble on May 4th!
